Chocolate Mung Kavum Recipe in Sri Lanka

This wonderful dessert, which combines the traditional taste of Chocolate Mung Kavum with a modern “chocolate” flavor, is quickly becoming a hit with children and young, adventurous eaters. It’s a great way to add a different twist to the traditional New Year’s table.

For the moong flour (green gram flour) mixture:

  • 🔅 Roasted Green Gram Flour – 250 grams
  • 🔅 Roasted Rice Flour – 250 grams
  • 🔅 Well-melted Honey (Kitul or Coconut Honey) – 1 ½ cups
  • 🔅 Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – 2-3 tablespoons
  • 🔅 A little crushed cloves and cardamom
  • 🔅 Salt – a pinch

Ingredients for the batter (flour mixture/dripping):

  • 🔅 Rice Flour – 1 cup
  • 🔅 Thickened Coconut Milk – ½ cup
  • 🔅 Turmeric Powder – a pinch (for color)
  • 🔅 A pinch of salt
  • 🔅 Oil as needed for frying

1️⃣ Step 1: Prepare the honey and chocolate mixture

  • First, put a pot on the stove and add the honey and heat it slightly.

2️⃣ Step 2: Mixing flour precisely

  • In a large bowl, mix the roasted green gram flour and rice flour.
  • Now add the prepared chocolate-mixed honey a little at a time and knead well with a wooden spoon.
  • This should be kneaded until it becomes a dough that does not stick to your hands.

3️⃣ Step 3: Making a ball of dough

  • Now place the dough we have prepared on a board and roll it out to a thickness (1 cm).
  • Now cut it into the traditional diamond shape (Rhombus).

4️⃣ Step 4: Making the butter

  • Prepare the batter and fry by mixing the rice flour, coconut milk, turmeric and salt to make a thick batter.
  • Dip the cut pieces of sweet potato in this batter and deep fry in hot oil until golden brown (the chocolate will make it a little darker).

✅ Tips for successful preparation Chocolate Mung Kavum

  • 🔰 Honey: Do not heat the honey too much and take it to the “stringy state”. Then the kavum dough may become hard. Remove from the stove when it thickens a little.
  • 🔰 Flour frying: The green gram flour and rice flour should be fried very well. Then the taste and aroma of the kavum will increase.
  • 🔰 Chocolate flavor: If you want a stronger chocolate flavor, you can melt a piece of “Dark Chocolate” while heating the honey.
  • 🔰 Turning off: Turning the mixture off slightly before cutting the kavum pieces can control breakage.
  • 🔰 These chocolate green kavum give a new look to the traditional taste and are a great treat during tea time.
