Blue Fenugreek Leaves Porridge – Sri Lankan Memories

blue fenugreek leaves porridge Sri Lankan herbal kenda with traditional foods

This morning, I was thinking about drinking a warm cup of blue fenugreek leaves porridge and eating a Samaposha Aggala on the side. But then I saw a few fresh kochi chilies growing outside and suddenly felt like making spicy coconut sambol to eat with bread instead ☺️

Traditional porridges like this are still enjoyed in many Sri Lankan homes as a light and comforting meal. Recipes like healthy sago porridge also follow the same simple homemade style using basic ingredients and traditional methods.

When we were kids, we absolutely hated drinking green porridge 😂

Whenever mom made herbal porridge in the morning, the whole house became quiet like a funeral. The three of us would just stare at each other, already knowing what was waiting for us in the kitchen 🤣

And my mother knew exactly how much we disliked it.

That’s why she would purposely make a big pot of green porridge on weekend mornings. Not only would she make the porridge, but she also wouldn’t cook anything else for breakfast. In the end, hunger would win and we had no choice but to drink it somehow 😄

Back then, we had five deep white porcelain plates at home that everyone used for meals. We used to call them “bokutu plates.” Mom would pour the porridge into those plates and line them up neatly on the table.

Then she would take one plate separately for dad because he would already be getting ready to leave for work.

While mom was busy helping dad, the three of us would quietly grab the sugar bottle and secretly mix spoonfuls of sugar into our porridge without making any sound 😁🙈

At that age, drinking plain herbal porridge felt impossible to us.

Now when I think about it, it honestly makes me laugh 😂

Especially remembering how much sugar we mixed into it just to somehow drink it. At that time, it felt like the only survival method we had 🤣

But now those memories feel really beautiful ❤️

Today I made blue fenugreek leaves porridge again, and this time I actually enjoyed drinking it peacefully ☺️💜

Now I laugh when I remember them..😁 Even more so when I remember that I drank them with sugar in the green leaves, I think “Eya bum. I wonder what kind of pig drink that was..🤣

🌿 What is Blue Fenugreek Leaves Porridge?

Blue fenugreek leaves porridge is a traditional Sri Lankan herbal porridge made using leafy greens, coconut milk, and simple ingredients commonly found in village-style home cooking.

Many people traditionally enjoy this type of porridge as a light and comforting drink, especially when they prefer something gentle and easy to digest.

In Sri Lankan homes, herbal porridges like this are often prepared in the morning and served warm as part of simple homemade routines.

💡 How We Usually Drink It

Most people usually drink this porridge warm in the morning. Some prefer it plain, while others add a little sugar like we secretly did as kids 😄

Some families also enjoy it together with bread, coconut sambol, or small traditional snacks on the side.

🥣 Why Many People Still Enjoy Traditional Porridge

Even today, many Sri Lankan families continue making herbal porridges because they are simple, affordable, and comforting.

Compared to heavy breakfasts, porridge feels lighter and easier, especially on quiet mornings at home.

From my experience, these traditional foods are not only about taste — they also bring back memories, routines, and small moments from childhood that people still remember years later.

If you enjoy natural and easy homemade drinks, you might also like trying basil seeds drink or healthy sago porridge as part of a simple daily routine.

📌 Final Thoughts

Looking back now, the funny part is how much we tried to avoid drinking herbal porridge as kids 😄 But somehow those exact memories become the ones we remember most fondly later in life.

Today, drinking a warm cup of blue fenugreek leaves porridge feels less like a childhood punishment and more like a small reminder of home, family, and simple Sri Lankan mornings ❤️
